The Los Angeles County Arboretum has a superb collection of bamboos in the ground. We are planning an informal tour of these wonderful specimens. Cost is expected to be $18 for admission. Plan on doing a lot of walking so come rested. Many films and some music videos have been produced in part here so along with the bamboo species review we’ll be chatting about entertainment. If you know something we don’t tell us on the tour! Let’s gather at the ticket office together before heading out.
SoCal ABS members and friends: you are invited to our yearly Cooking with Bamboo Shoots event. Come taste bamboo shoots in different forms: fresh, canned, pesto, and pickled! We will also be learning from the book Cooking With Bamboo by Kay Koppedrayer. This event takes place in Orange County, Calif. Please RSVP to landy@socalabs.org for the address. There is no fee. We hope you can come to support the SoCal chapter of the American Bamboo Society.
Members of the Southern California Chapter of the American Bamboo Society (ABS SoCal) are invited to spend a day at the San Diego Zoo. Admission will be free to members of ABS SoCal but there are limited spaces. We have done this event at least twice in the past and it is enormously popular. In addition to all of the wonderful species of animals the Zoo has a world class collection of plants including bamboos of course!
The plan is to meet at the giant statue of the lion in the front between 9 - 9:30 am and then enter as a group. Kids are free admission to the Zoo during the month of October. Any additional questions should be directed to Landy as well as RSVP at landy@socalabs.org . Figure on an hour tour of the bamboos led by one of us of ABS SoCal with the rest of the day as you prefer.

We are going to see Bamboozled: An Unexpected Bamboo Adventure at South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes Estates. Eight larger than life bamboo sculptures of birds made of bamboo using techniques learned in Taiwan R.O.C. by Donna Dodson and Andy Moerlein are on display until September 30th, 2025, at South Coast B.G.
We’ll meet in the courtyard just inside the entrance where the bamboo hummingbird is displayed as we begin to tour the sculptures.

ABS SoCal is scheduled to have a self-guided tour of the bamboos at Fullerton Arboretum on Saturday April 19, 2025. Let’s meet as a group at the front kiosk at 10 am before walking through the garden. Parking is free on the weekends. There is a $5 donation for the Fullerton Arboretum requested at the kiosk.
Fullerton Arboretum is part of the CSUF campus conveniently located just west of 57 Fwy at the Yorba Linda Blvd exit. So take the 57 Fwy to Yorba Linda Blvd exit and travel to Associated Rd. Make a left turn at Associated Rd and continue until only option is to go left or right. Go left and park in this parking lot.
Exhibition of “…large and small scale sculptures…” made from bamboo is being held at the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas, Calif.
Opening weekend will feature bamboo vendors and tours.

Come join us at our annual Fall Bamboo sale happening this September at the San Diego Botanic Garden. We can help find what you need for your garden, whether you are interested in ornamentals, functional screens, or something entirely else. Gerard Minakawa and Bamboo DNA will be leading a two-day workshop in collaboration with Joshua Tree Music Festival and local artist Bobby Furst to install a permanent bamboo roof over a gorgeous earthen seating area called “Sanctuary”, bringing much-needed shade to the desert audiences.
